Understanding the Concept of a Virus

A virus, specifically a computer virus, is a form of malicious software that infiltrates a user’s computer without their knowledge. Once inside, the virus can perform various harmful operations on the host computer.

The term “virus” was officially coined by Fred Cohen in 1983, drawing a comparison between a computer virus and the spread of infectious viruses among humans.

Typically, computers become infected with a virus when users unknowingly install it through downloaded files. The virus attaches itself to another program in a way that enables it to activate alongside the host program. It can also replicate itself and insert into other programs or files.

It is important to note that each computer virus is uniquely designed. While most viruses engage in malicious actions like data destruction, some remain inactive until a specific computer operation triggers their code.

Viruses can also spread when software or documents carrying them are transferred from one computer to another via networks, USB sticks, hard drives, or other data transfer methods.

Some viruses use stealth tactics to avoid detection by anti-virus software, especially if the software is outdated. Certain viruses can infect files without increasing their size, while others can terminate the task responsible for running the antivirus software to avoid detection.
