Understanding Proof-of-Immutability (PoIM)

Proof-of-Immutability (PoIM) is a blockchain system that utilizes an advanced hash-based approach to store blockchain metadata in a remote hash vault. Unlike traditional blockchain networks, PoIM-powered networks do not distribute and copy data among network nodes. Instead, they employ a hash pointer that does not contain any identifiable metadata. This unique method ensures the highest standards of data privacy while allowing the blockchain to scale and achieve high throughput without compromising its decentralized nature.

The PoIM system enables participants in the blockchain network to verify the integrity of each other’s data, proving its immutability, without compromising the privacy of the data being inspected. While immutability is generally considered a fundamental characteristic of all blockchains, the level of immutability can vary depending on factors such as the consensus mechanism and the size of the network. Smaller permissioned/private blockchain networks, for example, are often more susceptible to manipulation. PoIM provides a mechanism that allows participants to detect any manipulation or alteration of records without accessing the underlying database. Furthermore, as the adoption of blockchain technology increases, an auditing mechanism for validating the integrity of information within the blockchain ledger becomes crucial for the legal recognition of blockchain data and smart contracts.

Please note that PoIM was developed by ParallelChain Lab and has been patented (US-2021-0297265-A1; US-2021-0218549-A1; EP3848845; CN2021102000629400). It was initially implemented on ParallelChain Private and is expected to be implemented in “Inter-ParallelChain Communication” to meet the trust and data privacy protection requirements of permissioned and permissionless networks in the Web3 ecosystem.
