Understanding Market Orders

A market order, also referred to as a market buy or market sell, is the act of buying or selling a cryptocurrency on an exchange at the current best available price. Unlike limit orders, which are only executed at a specified price, market orders are fulfilled as buyers and sellers are willing to trade.

Typically, investors submit market order requests through a broker. These orders are widely popular due to their high liquidity and cost-effectiveness.

When executing a market order, a trader agrees to sell at the bid price or purchase at the asking price. This immediate execution ensures that the cryptocurrency, such as Bitcoin, is bought or sold instantly at the specified price.

Cryptocurrency traders should consider bid-offer spreads before entering a market order. A narrower spread indicates greater liquidity and a more competitive market.

However, market orders may pose a disadvantage for traders who are sensitive to price. Those who agree to a higher price may find their market order being filled as the exchange attempts to match the best possible price.
