Understanding Proof-of-Spacetime (PoSt)

Proof-of-Spacetime (PoSt) is a concept that is commonly associated with Filecoin. It functions as a method for storage miners to demonstrate their consistent storage of a unique piece of data for the network.

Similar to proof-of-capacity, PoSt requires participants to have a financial incentive to engage honestly in the network without gaining any advantage from harming it. However, PoSt differentiates itself by allowing network participants to showcase their physical storage of data over a specific period of time. This is accomplished by randomly selecting miners whose data is read for verification purposes.

The creators of proof-of-spacetime, Tal Moran and Ilan Orlov, refer to this as the “Rational” Proofs of Space-Time. They argue that the true cost of storage is directly proportional to both the storage capacity and the duration of usage.
