What Is a Bit?
A bit, short for “binary digit,” is a fundamental unit of information in computing. It represents a logical state that can have two possible values: 0 and 1. Bits are often grouped together into bytes to store data and perform specific instructions. A byte typically consists of eight bits, while a nibble refers to a group of four bits.
Working with information on a bit-by-bit basis is uncommon due to the small size of bits. Instead, bits are commonly organized into groups of eight, forming a byte. A byte has the capacity to store one ASCII character.
It is important to understand that a kilobyte is equal to 1.024 bytes. This is because computers use binary math instead of decimal math.
When it comes to computer storage and memory, measurements are usually expressed in megabytes (MB) and gigabytes (GB). However, hard drive manufacturers often use decimal number systems to define storage space. In this system, 1 MB is equivalent to one million bytes, and 1 GB is equivalent to one billion bytes. It is worth noting that computers operate on a binary system, which may result in different values.
