What Is Java?

Java is a programming language that aims to minimize implementation dependencies. It is a versatile language that is based on classes and objects. Java is highly popular for application development due to its speed, security, and reliability. It is utilized in various devices such as data centers, laptops, consoles, phones, and scientific supercomputers.

The Java platform consists of a collection of programs that assist programmers in efficiently developing and running Java applications. This platform encompasses an execution engine, a compiler, and a range of libraries.

Java is commonly employed in the creation of Android apps, enterprise software, mobile applications, big data analytics, programming hardware devices, and server-side technologies like Apache, JBoss, GlassFish, and more.

Originally known as OAK, Java was initially developed for portable devices and set-top boxes. However, in 1995, Sun Microsystems rebranded it as “Java” and made modifications to cater to the needs of web development following the failure of OAK.

In 2009, Oracle Corporation acquired Sun Microsystems, gaining ownership of various software assets, including Java, MySQL, and Solaris.
