What Is a Dolphin?

A dolphin is a term used to categorize cryptocurrency investors based on the size of their holdings. While small investors, also known as minnows or fish, have modest holdings of a specific currency or a small overall portfolio, dolphins fall in between these two classifications. They are not the smallest players in the crypto market, but they haven’t accumulated a significant enough holding to be classified as whales.

Unlike dolphins or minnows, crypto whales attract significant attention from the crypto community. There are numerous stories about whales moving substantial amounts of money, particularly across the Bitcoin blockchain. These stories highlight one of Bitcoin’s main advantages: its extremely low transaction fees. It is often reported that crypto whales have moved hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of Bitcoin for just a few dollars in fees.
