Chain Reorganization

Blockchain technology is a complex combination of processes that ensures the secure storage and distribution of data among node operators. Each active copy of the distributed ledger or blockchain is considered a node. Nodes have the responsibility of keeping their copies of the blockchain updated in order to successfully verify transactions. This is where chain reorganization plays a crucial role.

In a blockchain, there is a long string of blocks connected in a distributed ledger. Each block is a collection of numerous processed transactions.

However, as the blockchain evolves and more transactions are completed, the string of blocks becomes larger. Chain reorganization is the process in which a node deactivates blocks in its old longest chain to add the latest blocks, which are the building elements of the new longest chain.

Chain reorganization typically occurs in busier blockchains like Bitcoin and Ethereum, where nodes may simultaneously build a new block at the same time and position. In such cases, when the two nodes update their copy of the ledger, the node that has produced a shorter follow-up chain undergoes chain reorganization. Essentially, chain reorganization ensures that all node operators have the same copy of the distributed ledger.

Chain reorganization is a central process that facilitates the successful operation of blockchains. Without chain reorganization, the concept of a unified ledger existing with each node would be impossible.

Some analysts argue that chain reorganization can potentially result in many rejected transactions. In theory, this is possible if your transactions are recorded in the orphan block that is rejected. However, this rarely occurs. More often than not, the transactions recorded in the orphan block and the block that introduces the new longest chain are the same.

As a relatively straightforward process, chain reorganization is executed within seconds and does not slow down the processing times for new transactions. This essential mechanism allows blockchain technology to be versatile in its applications and use cases. Thanks to chain reorganization, all copies of the ledger saved across different nodes are identical, ensuring the validity of all recorded transactions.
